I have never fished Lake Austin, but I did some research and here is what I found.
Lake Austin is the 6th part of a chain of lakes that are on the Colorado River. Lake Austin is located in Austin Texas.
It’s a large lake. According to the Texas Parks and Wildlife the surface area is 1599 acres and the maximum depth is 75 feet. It is a popular lake for fisherman and recreational boaters. In the summer months, it’s best to fish in the early morning or late evening. Because recreational boating is so popular on the lake, some say that fishing during the day is nearly impossible.
Lake Austin offers several species of fish such as, sunfish, and catfish, but it is most known for being largemouth bass lake.
Here is great news for bass fisherman. The lake water is clear which makes night fishing possible. As far as vegetation goes, there is watermilfoil, hydrilla and pondweed. Also, I learned there is a large amount hydrilla, so much, that there is a controversy about removing some of it.
You should be able to use standard Largemouth Bass lures. While researching, I did see white spinnerbait specifically mentioned, so you may want to pack a few of those. If you’re looking for specific tips for the lake, I invite you to check out the message board at Austin Bass Fishing. There are several discussions going on about fishing in Texas, you’ll find the latest fishing reports, tips and more. Keep in mind, this site contains information on other lakes besides Lake Austin.
There are 7 public access areas around the lake. There are also a couple of boat ramps and a bank access area. The Texas Parks and Wildlife department has put together a very informative page listing describing the various access points.
Austin Bass Fishing has also put together a page on the various boat ramps.
If you are looking for a Lake Austin fishing guide, I came across a couple of guides that might be able to get you on the water. Both these gentlemen specifically mention Lake Austin. I’m sure they can answer any questions you have. I must take a moment and point out, that I don’t know these men, I’m just passing on some information to help you.
From what I’ve read, Lake Austin sounds like a gem of a fishing lake. I may have to plan a vacation down there sometime in the near future…..
I hope I’ve been able to provide some good information for you. If you have any questions, feel free to post a comment or email me at ask@askscottgaines.com
