Looking for information to get started fishing for Perch? I invite you to read this article. It covers where to look for Perch, what equipment you need and various methods to use.

Introduction

Yellow Perch

Perch is a popular type of panfish. They spawn in the spring, and prefer cool water. During the spawn, can be found in the shallows, and in weed beds. Once the spawn is over, they’ll feed in the shallows then travel back to the deeper water. Perch travel in schools. When you’ve found one, don’t move because others are down there as well.

As a general rule, Perch will be found anywhere from 4-15 feet of water. Keep in mind they follow the baitfish so they may be deeper or more shallow than the general rule. You must really pay attention because, Perch are very adept at nibbling your bait off the hook, so you must be able to “feel” the nibble.

Equipment Needed:

  • Rod: 6-61/2 feet spinning
  • Reel: Spinning
  • Line: 6-8 lb test line
  • Terminal tackle: Snap swivel

Rod: Go with a 6-6 1/2 foot ultra light spinning rod because it’s a versitle rod that can be used to catch all kinds of pan fish.

Reel: Spinning reels-These are versatile reels that are easy to use, last a long time and are very effective for panfish.

Line: 6-8 lb test line- Monofiliment. These are little fish, you don’t need big heavy line. This size line allows you to enjoy the fight and also land the fish. Keep with the major manufactors such as Stren or Berkley

Snap Swivel- The snap swivel helps out the beginning fisherman in two ways:

  • The swivel part, reduces line twisting
  • The snap makes it simple to quickly change lures.

I suggest the Ball Bearing Swivel with Fast-Lock Snap
