Spinnerbaits

Filed under: Freshwater Fishing Basics — Scott Gaines @ 5:44 am

Spinnerbait is an all around easy effective bait to use. No tackle box is complete without several of these. They’re used to catch a variety of fish, especially Bass fishermen, they love Spinnerbait

What is spinnerbait????

As you can see it has a central wire bent into a V shape. One end of the “V” has one or several blades. These blades produce flash and vibration. This flash and vibration is the heart and soul of the spinnerbait. The other end of the wire, is the hook and body. A skirt is placed on the body to hide the hook. Spinnerbaits come in variety of options such as types of blades, number of blades, various color of skirts, well I think you get my meaning….

How do I use it?

They’re very easy to fish and are a great bait for the beginner.

You can simply cast them out and crank them back in or
you can use a stop and go retrieve. When using the stop and go retrieve, stop long enough to allow the skrit and blades to flutter. This causes flash which can attract fish.
try cranking the lure in, pausing ever so often.

Instead of pausing you may want to consider You may consider either giving it a jerk or two.

Which color Spinnerbait do I use?

On clear days, use the with the brightest and shiniest blades. When fishing on cloudy days or in dingy water, try dark finishes.

Why do Spinnerbaits work?

Spinnerbaits offer fish flash and rotating blades.

The flash suggest to the fish there are other fish in the area either bait fish or predators. This flash may prompt the fish into attacking.

The rotating blades allow fish to dect it by sending out vibrations. The fish pick up these vibrations via their lateral line. The lateral line is the only place on a fish that has nerve endings… its how they feel vibrations in the water, how they locate prey.

What’s the difference between the blades?

The wider blades will rotate slower and the longer more slender blades will rotate much quicker. The more blades the more vibration will occur in the water.

Here are some other tips on Spinnerbait:

  • All spinnerbaits are somewhat weedless
  • straight retrieve works as well as a stop and go (giving the blades and skirt time to flutter)
  • ALWAYS use a swivel when using spinnerbaits

Blades are connected to the wire by either a clevis or swivel. I suggest blades that are attached by a swivel, because it offers the blade the ability to turn at a wider arc thus producing more vibration.

I hope after reading this you have a better understanding of spinnerbait, how to use it and why it is so effective.
